Capestang, Hérault

Capestang, Herault, LanguedocCapestang nestles in the crook of the etang spotted flats near the Mediterranean coast, and the start of the foothills that lead up to the Haute Languedoc National Park.

The Canal du Midi wends it’s way between Bèziers and Carcasonne, looping to the north of the town, passing under just one bridge on it’s way through.

The church, looking more like a Norman castle than a church, can be seen for miles around, particularly from the flat lands to the south. On the church square called the Place Jean Jaures, the ubiquitous plane trees provide shade , partially obscuring the view of the imposing east face of the church.

On the square there is a twice-weekly  Market, selling everything you could possibly need, from fresh fruit and veg (seasonal of course), to leather goods and unusual cheeses.

There is a bar on each side of the square, and during the Summer the tables and chairs spread towards each other, their colour denoting which bar they belong to. Also on the square are one of the town’s boulangeries, a restaurant, and a bank. It really is the social centre of Capestang.

Venturing South through the narrow streets there are many other gems to be found; hidden restaurants, gites and chambres d’hote. Eventually the main road is reached. To the West on the edge of town is the Cave cooperative, selling the wares of the Vignerons d’Enserune. To the East, the town’s supermarket lies on the outskirts, with a DIY store right next door.
